"I've used After Effects on a daily basis for more than 8 years, but I was just scared to open Photoshop & Illustrator. This course helped me a lot. Jake Bartlett is an incredible instructor, he'll teach you every little trick he knows to help you discover and go further with these two softwares. After this course, I had enough confidence to create my own illustrations in Illustrator and to animate them with After Effects." - Julie Faussard, Summer 2019
Jake Bartlett is a motion designer and online instructor based in Denver Colorado. After working at a production company in Los Angeles for nearly five years he decided to quit his day job to pursue the freelancer’s life, teaching animation online. Throughout his career he’s had the opportunity to work for clients like Coca-Cola, Twitter, Skype, Evernote, HGTV, NatGeo Wild and Norah Jones.

Our student community is welcoming, diverse, and growing rapidly.
You can expect to commit about 15-20 hours per week on coursework. The lesson videos are 1-2 hours in length. There are 9 assignments total. Typically assigned on Mondays and Thursdays with soft deadlines the next day. We have designated weeks with no lessons or assignments built into the schedule so that students are able to keep up the pace of the course.
Schedule and Course Length
Length 8 weeks of Photoshop + Illustrator Unleashed
You can begin with either course! Both are a ton of fun! Photoshop and Illustrator Unleashed will teach you the foundations of Illustrator and Photoshop for motion design and After Effects Kickstart will teach you the foundation of AE. It's designed to take students from setting their first keyframe to animating a short explainer video.
If you are really on the fence about which one to take, we suggest Photoshop and Illustrator Unleashed first. This way you can become familiar with the tools that Adobe has to offer. You'll have more time getting comfortable in the software, making artwork, and learning techniques that you can use in some of the exercises in After Effects Kickstart.
You'll also have a better understanding of how PS and AI files are set up and created. This can be helpful when working with imported artwork in After Effects, which you will do in After Effects Kickstart.
This course will teach you how to create artwork from scratch using the tools and workflows that pro's use every day. You will master the most commonly used tools in both Photoshop and Illustrator as well as the best practices to use them.
The only thing you need to take this class is an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. We'll take you from blank page to finished piece, giving you the opportunity to build new skills with each lesson.
Adobe Illustrator CC 2018.1 (22.1.0 or Higher)
Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1.5 or Higher)
Our flexible course format makes it possible to be engaged from anywhere in the world on your own schedule. All of our courses are taught completely online through pre-recorded lesson videos, podcasts, and handouts. Students typically receive homework assignments twice per week, which have soft deadlines. All student work is critiqued by our highly trained Teaching Assistants. School of Motion TA’s are professional motion designers with real life experience in the industry. They will be there for you throughout the entire session to critique your work in our proprietary critique portal. Our TA’s are able to critique as many versions of your work as you would like to submit during the duration of the session; so you get the feedback you need to sharpen your skills. During the course you will be invited to a private classroom that contains all of the Teaching Assistants and students in your session.
